Vibe Magazine Closing: Another Victim of the Internet Crisis

vibe magazine closingAnother big name in print media has bit the dust. Vibe Magazine, which focused on hip hop news and trends, is “closing immediately” according to a report in The New York Times.

The magazine’s sudden departure continues a trend of print publications either closing up shop or transitioning to an online-only version. Already this year, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer and The Christian Science Monitor have pursued the latter approach, while the Rocky Mountain News was forced to shut its doors completely.

It’s a bit surprising that Vibe’s not going to at least try the online-only route, as it has a fairly recognizable brand name, a well-defined target audience, and even has its own televised annual awards show. PaidContent reports that this is a possibility, as Vibe founder and famed music producer Quincy Jones is looking to buy back the magazine and keep it going in online-only form, but the plan is still a work in progress.

Nonetheless, as has been the case with other print media closures, Vibe has faced a perfect storm of an especially bad economy for print advertising and declining circulation as more people turn to the Web for news and entertainment. Unless Jones is able to put together a deal to keep Vibe alive in online-only format, it marks yet another significant loss at the hands of new media.

Twitter Revamps Following and Followers Pages

Twitter has just rolled out an update to the pages where you browse the list of people you’re following and those following you. These pages – which you get to by clicking the following/follower counts on any user profile – now come with a whole lot more information about other Twitter users.

For example, on the page listing your followers, Twitter now shows a check mark of the people you follow back. There’s also a pull-down menu that includes options for direct messaging them, sending them an @ mention, following them (if you’re not already doing so), or blocking them.

Meanwhile, on the page listing people you follow, there are options for sending them a mention, unfollowing, or, if they follow you, sending them a direct message. Both on this page and on that of your followers, you also get to see each user’s bio.

New Design

Old Design

Interestingly, these options aren’t just available on your profile, but on any profile you visit. Comparing this to the previous design, which included just a name and profile picture, it’s a lot more information that you now have to work with, and an excellent way to find new people to follow.

In other words, you can now visit a friend or co-workers profile, see who they’re following, and then decide whether you want to follow those people based on their profile information (without actually visiting their profile) which is available to you right there. However, you can still toggle between the new “expanded view” and “list view,” which is more like the former format.

This is reminiscent of the change that Twitter recently made to include more metadata in the follower notification emails it sends out, allowing you to make a quicker decision as to whether or not you want to return the follow. In all, it points to Twitter giving its users more tools to expand their networks on the site.

Konami Code Now Gets You a Ford Fiesta

ford fiestaThe “Konami Code,” the cheat code that originates in 1980s era video games, is increasingly finding its way into Web sites and services like Facebook, Digg, and Google Reader, that use the famous “up up down down left right left right b a” string of commands to unlock special features or easter eggs.

Now, the code has found its way into the recently released casual game Hover Kart by OMGPOP. And, cleverly enough, it’s actually tied to a sponsorship, as the code unlocks a virtual Ford Fiesta that comes with some special features versus the standard vehicle you use to race around the track.

Aside from being a fun time waster (Hover Kart has already been played more than 1.3 million times and logged 36,000 “hours wasted”), the integration is yet another piece of the Ford Fiesta Movement, which we wrote about earlier this year.

The program, which features 100 Internet power users driving Fiesta’s and participating in various online activities for six months, is part of why Ford is doing so well in social media relative to its American car-making peers. And although the Hover Kart sponsorship is quite subtle, it’s yet another sign that Ford “gets it,” as they’ve both latched onto a hot new game and shown a bit of geek savvy by connecting their brand to an ongoing Internet meme.

In addition to the in-game placement, Ford sent one of its Fiesta agents into OMGPOP’s offices for a closer look at the game. Here’s the video:
